St Monnica’s outreach programmes

In the first issue of the St Monnica’s Newsletter we featured the St Monnica’s Outreach Programmes which church members can contribute to. They were Tumelo Home for Handicapped Children, Philani Orphan Care and the Winnie Mandela Park Business Project.

For this issue, we are focusing on the New Jerusalem Children’s Home which was established in 2002 by Anna Mojapelo. The home provides 24 hourcare for traumatised, abused, abandoned,
orphaned, HIV positive and vulnerable children, addressing their physical, emotional, educational and spiritual needs. The home has thus far been successful in healing 12 children from HIV, children on antiretroviral treatment are thriving very well, a Montessori preschool has been established, a borehole, electric fence and reaction force security have been installed. The home property has been paved (upcoming projects are renovation, the building of home units for family like environment and the building of a school).

The New Jerusalem Children’s Home is a part of an effective network with other organisations in the Gauteng Province like Aids Consortium, Abandoned Babies Forum, Child Welfare, Trauma Centres, South African Police, communities/schools, hospitals/clinics and NGOs. Particularly in the surrounding areas of Midrand, Tembisa and Kempton Park (near Johannesburg).

The New Jerusalem Children’s Home is situated at 138 Steyn Road, President Park (Midrand), Gauteng Province, South Africa (near Johannesburg). It is within the walking distance from Kanana, Ivory Park, Rabie Ridge, Ebony Park and Kaalfontein. Via the N1 Highway from
both directions Pretoria and Johannesburg the home is easy to find (see the webpage ‘directions’).

The home urgently requires the following: Medium and XL disposable nappies, cleaning detergent, NAN No 2 milk formula. The above and other donations can be made by contacting Anna on
082 732 7832 or by visiting their website for more information: www.newjerusalem.co.za

St Monnica's first issue on outreach programmes

The church is involved in the following programmes:

  • Tumelo Home for handicapped children – a home to 30 residents of Ivory who are intellectually challenged, many of whom are orphaned. The church donates canned foods, clothing and their time, but the home is not dependent on these donations. People are welcome to donate their time as well to this organisation and to spend time with the children.
  • Philani Orphan Care – this is a feeding project that has been operational for the past five
years. The St Monnica’s congregation donates R30 a month and this helps provide small meals to 120 children a day. These children are mainly Aids orphans living within the
community in shacks and are in some cases heads of families.
  • Winnie Mandela Park Business Project – this project was started by Mrs Boku three years ago and has been a huge success. The project teaches women how to start small businesses based on the needs of the community. This includes selling eggs, vegetables,
maize meal and second-hand clothes. They are given R300 start-up fee and repay it in
monthly instalments of R25 a month. They have recently acquired a piece of council land
where they have started to plant seeds for vegetable and they are running a soup kitchen for the people who work on the piece of land.
